Unit Converter

Favorite

Convert between units of length, area, volume, mass, pressure, force, energy, power, speed, time and temperature, plus common electrical quantities such as voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, frequency and charge: pick the from and to units to get the result, with a full comparison of every unit in the same quantity.

Key points

The unit converter switches between different units of the same quantity: non-temperature quantities use the proportional relation target = source × from-unit factor ÷ to-unit factor, while temperature, which has a zero offset, is first normalized to Celsius. It covers length, area, volume, mass, pressure, force, energy, power, speed, time and temperature, along with voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, inductance, frequency and charge. Enter a value and choose the from and to units to get the result, plus a comparison of every unit in that quantity.

Inputs

target = source × k_from ÷ k_to | temperature: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32

Engineering notes

  • Within one quantity the conversion is purely proportional: target = source × k_from ÷ k_to, where k is the factor relative to the base unit, e.g. 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 psi ≈ 6.895 kPa.
  • Temperature is an affine quantity with a zero offset, so it cannot be converted by a simple factor: normalize to °C first, then convert to the target scale; the zero points of kelvin and Rankine are −273.15 °C and −459.67 °F.
  • Electrical units step by 10³: 1 kΩ = 1000 Ω, 1 µF = 1000 nF = 1e6 pF, 1 MHz = 1000 kHz; battery capacity 1 Ah = 1000 mAh = 3600 C.
  • Common PCB length references: 1 mil = 0.001 in = 0.0254 mm, and 1 oz of copper is about 34.8 µm thick (oz is a mass unit; this thickness is an industry convention).
